Die Cast Model Airplanes
How to Build A Die Cast Model Airplane
Die casting is a process in which a two sided mold is created, sprayed with a lubricant, and then is injected with liquefied metal or plastic. Once the hot material has cooled the two mold halves are separated and the cast is removed. A die cast model airplane kit generally consists of several casts to produce the necessary parts to build your die cast model airplane. The casts are called trees and these trees hold all the parts required to build a die cast model airplane. The trees are then packaged into a kit.
Seasoned die cast model builders more than likely have a work area they are comfortable with, but if you don’t you will need one. It should be large enough to set freshly glued or painted parts safely aside to dry while you are doing other things. And your work space should also provide enough lighting so you can clearly see instructions and easily perform any assembly work.
One of the conveniences of die cast model airplane kits is that you can leave parts on the cast tree until you are ready to use them. As a matter of fact it is suggested you do this to prevent misplacing or loosing parts. Keeping parts on the cast tree, until you ready for them, also helps in the organization of the assembly process. The down side to die cast model kits is that you need to wash the cast trees to remove lubricant residue so paint properly adheres to part surfaces. Sometimes you will also need to remove mold seam excesses from the parts or patch seams where parts might misalign.
All die cast model airplane kits come with step-by-step instructions. Remove the instructions from your kit and review them before beginning any assembly work. This will help give you an idea of how your die cast model airplane will go together and will also let you know what tools and the types of adhesive you will need or can use to build your die cast model airplane.
